Hand-Carved Quilted Lily & Butterfly Shelf Sitter
This hand-carved shelf sitter is a richly detailed folk-art piece that brings together floral motifs, quilt patterns, and nature. Carved entirely by hand from white pine, the piece stands approximately 8.25 inches tall and 6.25 inches wide, giving it a strong, grounded presence suited for a mantel, shelf, or tabletop display.
Each side features a carved lily in a different color palette, allowing the piece to be enjoyed from multiple viewpoints. One side includes an added narrative detail—a butterfly with quilted wings, carved in relief with traditional quilt block patterns. The butterfly’s wings echo the geometry found throughout the piece, visually linking flower, quilt, and form into a single, cohesive design.
The background is carved with a subtle diamond texture reminiscent of stitched quilt backing, providing contrast and depth without overwhelming the main elements. Hand-painted in warm earth tones accented with jewel-like greens, pinks, and golds, the colors feel rooted in traditional folk art while remaining vibrant and expressive. Gentle shimmer highlights the carved lines and quilt blocks while catching the light.
The piece is supported by a carved base with turned legs, each accented with small quilt-inspired motifs that repeat the patterns found above. This thoughtful repetition gives the shelf sitter a sense of balance and continuity.
As with all my work, this shelf sitter is entirely hand carved and hand painted, with no power carving tools used. Natural wood grain, carving marks, and slight variations are intentionally preserved as part of the character of a handmade object. This piece is one of a kind and signed.
